NUTRITION AND DIET FOR CONSTIPATION

Elimination diet. Avoid such foods that can worsen your constipation. This may include foods that are considered binding foods such as banana, white rice, applesauce, cheese and foods made from white flour.

Eat more fiber. Fiber helps bring back normal stool consistency. People who eats fiber rich diets rarely has constipation episodes. Fiber rich foods are fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. Wheat bran is rich in fiber that can be found in most breakfast cereals. Brocilli, potatoes, raisins, dried apricots, prunes and other bean products can be included in your diet.

Eat a lot of whole foods such as vegetables, whole grains, fruits, protein and essential fatty acids. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.



SUPPLEMENTS FOR CONSTIPATION

The following supplements may be helpful to reduce the symptoms of constipation.

Vitamin C. 1,000 milligrams of vitamins C taken every 2 waking hours can help loosen constipation.

Folic acid, in a clinical study, it has been identified that women who suffers constipation are low in vitamin B folic acid. When given folic acid supplement, symptoms of constipation improved. It is recommended that 5,000 micrograms of folic acid may show improvement. Be cautioned, taking 1,000 microgarms and more of folic acid should be supervised by a doctor.

Pantothenic acid (200 mcg with meals) Vitamin B pantothenic acid is known to improve constipation syptoms in clinical trials. You may take 250 milligrams of pantotheninc acid per day.

Digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes such as bromelain and pancreatin may help bring back the normalcy of your digestive system. Bromelain and pancreatin can be bought in most health stores.

Avoid Iron. Iron is said to aggravate the symptoms of constipation.



Exercise and Constipation

Movement and physical exercise can stimulate peristalsis. There is no need for a rigorious exercise, even a walk for 30 minutes may already be helpful.


BIOFEEDBACK AS CONSTIPATION TREATMENT

In a clinical trial conducted on constipated children. 5 sessions of biofeedback has greatly improved constipation symptoms by enabling the children to relax the anal sphincters and promote bowel movement.


HERBAL MEDICINE FOR CONSTIPATION

Psyllium. Psyllium is a fiber rich herb that contains mucilage that absorbs water and adds bulk to the stool. Psyllium are availble in most health stores or even some over-the-counter products and should always be taken with at least 8 oz of water.
